Nutrition and the Equine Foot

چکیده
Many performance and racehorses cannot perform to their potential because of hoof problems. The old adage “no hoof, no horse” still applies today and this article examines some of the nutritional factors that impact the hoof. There are many factors that can influence development of the hoof, and this article will discuss some of these variables that can aid the search for increased hoof growth and improved hoof quality. Unfortunately, rapid hoof wall growth may not be synonymous with top hoof quality. Despite recent advances in the prevention or treatment of equine disease, laminitis remains high on the list of potentially crippling or life-threatening diseases. The second part of the article will summarize new research findings in the cause, pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment of laminitis.

Equine pericardium as a biological covering for the treatment of diabetic foot wounds: a prospective study.
BACKGROUND Diabetic foot wounds remain a significant health-care issue. Healing these wounds in a timely manner is of paramount importance because the duration of ulceration correlates with increased rates of infection and amputation, costing billions of dollars yearly. Collagen-based matrices have been used as wound covers and have been shown to improve and expedite healing. We present our exp...
متن کاملDetermination of coefficient of friction between the equine foot and different ground surfaces: an in vitro study
Slippery surfaces are a continuous concern in equine veterinary practice during both treatment and orthopaedic work-ups, especially when horses have to trot on circles. Sliding of the equine foot on the ground with the potential of injury is prevented if the horizontally acting accelerating or decelerating forces on the foot do not exceed maximal friction. Friction can be calculated and therefo...

The forces of evolution have produced in the equine foot a miracle of bioengineering. However, despite being a success in its natural environment, the equine foot becomes a common site of disease and injury when subjected to the demands of human domestication. A sound knowledge of the anatomy of the equine foot (Fig 1) is necessary to understand the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of i...

Equine laminitis is a crippling disease that affects all breeds of horses and is commonly a career-ending and often life-threatening disease. Treatment of laminitis continues to be a controversial topic in equine veterinary medicine because there is a lack of universally efficacious treatment modalities. We recently developed a practical method to efficiently deliver transgene-produced proteins...
